Permaculture Plantings For Poultry

Forage Plants

Forage plants will be highly browsed in a poultry yard, so make sure to select the hardiest of plants.  Of the berry family, mulberries and elderberries are excellent, as well as blackberries and gooseberries.  Vines can be used as poultry forage such as grape, passion-fruit, cucumber and some beans and peas.  Some Australian native bush tucker plants, include lilly pilly, native figs and kangaroo apple.  Vegetable greens you can grow around include, rocket, chinese greens, silver-beet, chard and dandelion.

Some ground covers that are excellent for your chickens include, pig weed, fat hen, sow thistle and plantain.  Other plants of interest include clover, lucerne, buckwheat, nettles and garlic.  Sunflowers are an excellent source of protein and the heads can be dried and stored.
